August 11-
Speaker Greg Rutter
Please RSVP for Dinner by/before Thursday, August 7th.
Greg Rutter - his friends call him Rutter, and you should too - started sailing at age 8. His parents sent him out sailing on the San Francisco Bay, and were shocked he made it back.
Rutter went to UC Santa Cruz where he sailed dinghies, through which he met skippers of keelboats, setting the hook for his future.
After college, Rutter joined a sailing club in Marina del Rey where he chartered cruising boats. Unfortunately, his friends had a habit of seasickness, which pushed him into competitive racing with experienced sailors.
After 16 seasons aboard various boats, including Olsen 40, Express 37, and Shock 35 in its heyday (31 boats at the Nationals) Rutter went to Seattle. Aboard a Ross 930 his team was on the podium for five consecutive years. Moving back to LA, he got back into area racing, winning the Allen Elliot Trophy on two consecutive Cruising boats. He moved on to a J-111 and Farr 44 creating winning records. After a season aboard Farr 40 Coquille/ Coquille 400, he now trims main on J-122 Cheeky.
Rutter has been known to cruise to Catalina, and other destinations, where he remains a wanted man.
